I came back to Phnom Penh yesterday evening with Martyna. We hailed down a taxi van who decide he was going to do laps of the main road through town til he got the van full. I have blogged about these taxi vans before.
Hot and un air conditioned we decide while he had stopped to part ways and get another van that at least was moving in a straight direction towards Phnom Penh. The young offsider wouldn’t open the door and let us out. Things got a bit tense for a while but finally we got out and straight into another van – crowded but moving.
Finally arrived in Phnom Penh ( never the same place) with tuk tuk drivers and motor cycle taxis hassling as soon as you get out of the van.
I carry a card for the hotel I stay at with a map on the back. Each time I arrive me and the tuk tuk driver end up stopping on the side of the road while I ring the hotel and they explain to the driver in Cambodian where they are. It always works.
In the heat and uncertainty I wonder if there is an age when all this adventure ceases to be an adventure. I was thinking there yesterday at one point that that business class travel and 5 star hotels of years gone by all seem like a dream.
